Glossary of Food Names in Malay, Sri Lankan, Indonesian and English 

 Listed below are the most common herbs, spices, vegetables and meat used in our Sri Lankan Malay daily cuisine and we hope that these Malay terms  that are missing in our vocabulary will help everyone improve their knowledge. The Story of How Minangkabau Got It’s Name.

The article that appeared  on the internet ‘Unique Story About The History Of The Name Minangkabau’ a college essay by Yuehuan, July 2012, now confirms the story narrated to us by Professor Datuk Zainal Kling of Malaysia on our way to Lake Toba in Indonesia.

‘The history of the Minangkabau name has a unique legend associated with it and it’s about how a Minangkabau prince and a neighboring nation had a dispute over land. Instead of going to war and destroying each other the two princes decided to settle the dispute with two fighting water buffaloes. Jainudeen Awwal Cuttilan

History

The following extract about Jainudeen Awwal Cuttilan appeared 0n page 41 of Who’s Who of Ceylon, Third Edition, 1928.

Cuttilan, Jainudeen Awal (Awwal). son of Tuan Aval (Awwal) Cuttilan, landed proprietor, plumbago merchant, of Slave Island, whose ancestors came from Manangakabo (Minangkabau), Java in connection with Military duty in Colombo. (According to the two surviving sons, Raden Kirti was rescued by the then Portuguese Vice-Roy of Gowa, Indonesia, Hon. In 1967 at Heathrow airport a customs officer asked M U J Cuttilan whether he was related to a Raden “Daring Gunner” Cuttilan who fought alongside him in the British Army during the Suez Canal crisis.  A search on Google recently highlights a    Corporal   T R T Cuttilan in the outward passenger list 1890 – 1960.
